9 Signs Your Home is Overdue for Some Joy Sparking
Our culture says that in order to be successful you need to have the latest, biggest and best of everything.
More. More. More. All the time.
Besides a whole lot of stress chasing that prize, you know what that constant pressure to be a success also gets you?
Piles of clutter in your house!!
Clutter is stuff that you don’t love or use that steals your precious time and wastes your hard-earned money.
It masquerades as a good bargain or a useful item or something real cute then before you know it, turns into a complete joy-blocker and a stealer of weekends.
Thanks to targeted advertising, mama letting you keep a few things at her house, societal norms around success pressuring you to buy the latest, the best and just have it all and a little retail therapy now and then, you have amassed quite a collection.
Here are 9 signs that your home is officially cluttered.
1. You apologize for the mess when people come over (if you let them).
This is sad isn’t it? One of the first things you do when a friend walks through your door is apologize. Then what does the person do? Say its ok, then nearly trip over your piles of stuff on the way in. Isn’t your home meant to be a sanctuary?
How Sweet Digs will help
After we are done organizing your home using the KonMari Method ™ , you will finally have that comfortable and inviting space you have always wanted.
In fact, you will want to have a party to show off your “new” space! Don’t forget to invite me please! I love snacks.
2. You store stuff at your mama’s house.
Mama’s basement and your old room is a collection of your life from grades 1-8, stuff from all your old boyfriends, things people gave you that you didn’t like and you were so nice to “give” to your mama, your old cell phones, clothes you’ll fit again someday, your college degree . . . poor mama can’t even have your aunts and them over because your stuff is blocking her good china.
How Sweet Digs will help (you and your sweet mama)
Together, we will review everything at your house to clear out and make room. Then we can tackle mama’s house and figure out what brings you joy to keep there. You will have fun laughing and enjoying those old memories and your mama would be grateful. Remember she brought you in this world and she can take you out if you don’t get your stuff out of her house.
3. You have more than one junk drawer.
I live in NY where real estate is expensive and space is practically non-existent. Having more than one junk drawer means that something important will end up traveling around my apartment hiding when I want to find it. Ain’t nobody got space for that!
You don’t really want to give up prime space to junk. I mean do you really need the charger from the first Iphone ever? Did Steve Jobs even still have one of those?
How Sweet Digs will help
I will get the junk out of your junk drawer! Nothing you keep will be junk. If it’s batteries, wires, screws, whatever, we will figure out what they are for and keep the ones that still have a true purpose. I can make that draw look so pretty you will be shocked you ever thought of any of that stuff as junk!
4. You often say you never have anything to wear (but your closet is full.)
Going shopping is so fun but is truly a waste of money and time if you aren’t actually wearing the clothes. I mean really, why are you shopping every time you see Rihanna drop a new collection for Fenty? How many pair of black pants can one woman have?
How Sweet Digs will help
I will teach you how to shop with intention so that you will buy things you love and feel good about doing so. You know that dress you love that fits your assets just right? Why can’t the rest of your clothes be just like that? Well, they can! You just have to choose them with that state of mind. When you open your closet it is possible for you to be excited to wear anything you lay your eyes on.
5. You don’t use your kitchen or dining table to eat.
It’s a collection of new mail, old mail, new shopping, old shopping, your kid’s most recent anything, something mama snuck back in that you had at her house. . . no space for food!
How Sweet Digs will help
I will help you have family dinners again by clearing all that nasty paperwork and junkmail off the table. I can create a digital or hard copy filing system with papers you actually need to keep or take action on right now. I can also create a functional entryway to deal with all that paper as you bring it in everyday and a system to handle your current to-dos.
6. You have videotapes but no VCR, DVDs but no DVD player, records but no… you get the picture.
Maybe the VCR is at mama’s house or hiding on your kitchen table?
How Sweet Digs will help
I’m a music lover through and through and until last year I had a ton of CDs. I decided to finally go through them and digitized my whole collection except for those not available online. It was so freeing and amazing to get back all that space and to always have my music with me.
I can do exactly the same for you and we can laugh as we look back at the CD’s covers of how people use to dress in the 90’s. LOL.
7. You have every “art” creation your kid ever made.
I use the term “art” loosely. Every pic with your kid’s little handprint turned into flowers, animals (and that thing you aren’t even sure what it is) sitting in your house. Your child’s hand has more than doubled in size and picks up a cell phone more often than a crayon these days. Maybe it’s time to review that pile?
How Sweet Digs will help
I can work with you and your child to review their things and teach them how to organize. I have a young daughter who I am teaching the same lessons. (No, unfortunately for me, she didn’t inherit my natural ability to organize!) Also by you changing your approach and bringing new and organized energy into your home you will influence your child as well. I can also suggest easy digital or hard copy ways to organize her art.
8. When you are sick, finding unexpired medicine is an expedition to the four corners of your house.
Is it in the bathroom? The kitchen? The bag you just brought home two days from Target unopened by the front door? Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Who knows?
How Sweet Digs will help
I will start by sorting through your health-related items getting rid of everything expired so that you know exactly what you have. I will find homes for each item so if you take it out you know exactly where it is when you need it and where to put it when you are done. I will also help you learn to use easily manageable lists when shopping to ensure that you don’t forget to grab a new bottle of pain killer on your next pharmacy run.
9. You have already tried to organize on your own multiple times.
And then everything goes right back to where it started right? So damn frustrating!!
How Sweet Digs will help
It is absolutely fine if you don’t have the time or the knowledge on how to organize. I can take that pressure off of you by doing the work completely or working with you and teaching you easy tips and tricks to maintain it. I can also look at your schedule and figure out how to squeeze more out of that lemon.
It’s absolutely possible. Let’s do this together!
